We are a family of four, two adults and two young children, relocating to Wellington and looking for a good-value two-bedroom rental for a long-term tenancy. Our planned move-in date is around 15 October 2026. We will be living in Wellington for more than three years while James undertakes a fully funded PhD at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington. James has been awarded a Wellington Doctoral Scholarship, providing secure funding during the PhD, and our family has visas covering our long-term stay in New Zealand. Robina also holds a New Zealand work visa and is permitted to work during our time in Wellington. We are therefore not coming to Wellington as short-term visitors or backpackers. We are relocating as a stable family and are looking for a home where we can settle comfortably for the coming years. We also have no pets. Our preferred areas are Brooklyn, Kelburn and Karori, although we are very open to nearby areas if a property meets our main requirements. Our ideal budget is around NZ$450–550 per week, with some flexibility for an especially suitable property offering good overall value. Our main priorities are: Two bedrooms and suitable for a family of four Sunny and ideally north-facing, with good natural light Dry, warm and well ventilated, with no known mould or dampness problems Elevated and away from significant tsunami, coastal flooding or other known flood exposure Preferably on relatively stable ground, with low landslip or liquefaction exposure where this information is available Structurally sound and reasonably suitable for Wellington earthquake conditions Safe and quiet for young children Good access to public transport, shops and everyday services Reasonable access to Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, particularly the Kelburn campus We understand that no property can be completely earthquake-proof and that rental agents may not have detailed geotechnical or structural information. However, earthquake resilience and avoiding significant natural-hazard exposure are particularly important to us. Where available, we would appreciate any information about the building’s age and construction, earthquake strengthening or structural assessments, ground conditions, heating, insulation, ventilation, and any previous mould, dampness or moisture issues. We are looking for a comfortable, practical and economical family home rather than anything luxurious, and we would especially appreciate properties offering excellent long-term value. We are also very interested in suitable properties becoming available around 15 October that may not yet have been publicly advertised. As we are currently overseas, properties that can initially be viewed through video call, detailed photos or a virtual viewing would be particularly helpful. We would be happy to provide documentation confirming the PhD programme, doctoral scholarship, visas, identity, references, and other information normally required for a tenancy application.
